Gateway NV55C54u 15.6" Discounts

Tim Boulay "Tim" (Washington, D.C.) :
Computer began to glitch intermittently about once a week, refusing to start and going into auto-repair mode. After a month, this started happening several times each week and taking up to 8 hours before the computer would work again. Contacted juliojdavid numerous times, but since it was outside the 30-day Amazon refund window, they refused to repair, replace or refund, and since it's a refurbished computer, Gateway has no warranty. Computer is now useless, despite several clean install attempts.

I bought the Gateway NV55C56u, which is just a little update from the 54u, as a replacement for an older laptop with Windows Vista. It's performance with Windows 7 is better then the older Vista laptop, but from signon to fully ready to use is still slower then other Windows 7 Laptops. I upgraded the memmory to full 8GB for about $38 purchased from Amazon online. This was to get better performance when needed for graphic's etc. Initial setup was easy an only took a few minutes, then had to do about 8 or 9 Windows software updates once online

NoxNoctura (West Virginia) :
I bought this for my girlfriend because she wanted a quality, reliable laptop without paying a fortune. Overall, it's a pretty good laptop. It's not a gaming machine, by any means, but that's not what it was purchased for. The negatives are as follows:
Offset touchpad - This thing is so far off to the left that it's almost uncomfortable to use. It's aligned directly behind the spacebar, but due to the full numberpad, the spacebar is not centered on the laptop itself. Also, it's very easy to accidentally hit the touchpad with the edge of your hand while typing. This can cause the cursor to move to some random point in a document, or cause you to accidentally click on a link on a webpage while you're filling out an entry field. Definitely an inconvenience, and definitely something that should have been thought of when Gateway was designing this product.

Bwise (IA United States) :
Received today and love it. It looks like new. Felt good opening it up and getting to work. Feels very sturdy.
UPDATE - my high school granddaughter was looking for a laptop for school and I was more then happy to give her this laptop. She loves it. Kufgator was the seller and the laptop was like new. I don't see his name for this product anymore. Can't vouch for any other seller.

RedConOne (USA) :
As a simple laptop to carry around to work and not worry about breaking it due to its low cost this one isn't bad to have. I'd rather break this every time over any of my other more expensive laptops. With that said it does have built in wifi which can be helpful. As the other reviewer said it has a rather low processor. It doesn't offer much storage but then again there is a reason why they are cheap. This laptop is what i would consider for a work laptop that just needs simple internet connectivity and maybe a word program. This also wouldn't be a bad choice as a starter laptop for some kids, since it is cheap and kids usually destroy things.

Parris Johnson (NJ) :
cons: no hdmi, no recovery loaded or available thru gateways support, must purchase a cd
pros: price, size, speed,battery life

B. Goldfarb (Los Angeles, CA) :
I have had this laptop now for several months and can't be happier with it. The style is second to none. It is very similar to the new ultra books, not as thin, close but has everything I wanted and a DVD drive. Plenty of USB drives, has the new 3.0, has an HDMI, I5 and is super fast. The battery is built in and last for hours, I get at least 7.5 hours no problem. Also I really like the fact that this computer does not really get that hot. I have had laptops that just heat up, this one stays cool. The key is one of these new multi-function and works great. The screen looks fantastic as well, put a movie in looks great and the speakers are very good. Overall I am very happy with this computer

Christine S. Lok (Denver, CO United States) :
I love this laptop!!! I love the sleek look and I'm enjoying how user friendly it is. It was very easy to set up when I got it and have been on it practically every day. I've watched several movies on it already and have been listening to music as well. Sounds and looks great. I will be conducting a business very soon on my laptop and can't wait to get started.

Tuffy1 (Caracas, Venezuela) :
I purchased my Gateway Laptop just over a month ago and I'm very pleased with my purchase. Two years ago my wife and I purchased a Gateway Laptop for my son and that laptop has been very solid. I was impressed enough to go with Gateway for an upgrade for my Fujitsu Laptop which has been a disapointment(I worked for Fujitsu for many years). I would encourage buyers to consider a Gateway for your next purchase. Solid products and excellent support.

Jeremiah Mahuron (Austin, TX USA) :
This laptop is okay for basic use. I would recommend it for anyone who needs basic computing. Unfortunately I cannot recommend to very many other people because it cannot do very many tasks at once and when it comes to labor intensive things such as movie maker or iTunes computer is slow and usually crashes. Of course this is to be expected of netbooks but there are other options on the market around the same price that might get you a little bit better performance. With Windows 8 on the market this 1024 x 600 display will not allow you to upgrade and run Metro apps. For this reason if you want to get Windows 8 I would recommend getting a Windows 8 PC with a touchscreen. Overall this would be a great PC for kids or for someone looking for basic use.

Ae (Southern California) :
Excellent for business traveler or back-to-school, everything you need in this handy tool. Great storage and graphics support. Easily to expand storage with all the connection ports available. This ACER build platform is the best alternative to the much pricier high end models with the same functions.

Bitenrat "David V" (Sebring Fl) :
This is an awesome dual core netbook and the only downfall is having win7 starter installed. For the price I paid I am in a position to buy a full verson win 7 os. The case has a nice pinstripe design-dark and subdued. The screen size is perfect and it's a great starter netbook. The vendor packed it well and looked pretty much brand new condition.

Maria Smith (NJ) :
The laptop came on time and everything was in the box that was expected and so far it works great. Only minus I can think is that it's a little bigger and bulkier than I had expected. Otherwise it's a great laptop, I'm really just using it for online access but it definitely exceeds those needs.

Christie B (US of A) :
I chose this rating due to the fact that every time I get on the computer it shows that I have a full internet connection, but then when I go to the internet, I get a message that I have no internet connection. I then have to troubleshoot every time and for some reason windows never can find a solution. I eventually get the connection, but this is ridiculous. My old computer with Windows 7 has a lot of purchased programs recently and I cannot transfer my backup to Windows 8. They want me to purchase everything over again even my Adobe Photoshop!! There are some serious issues here and will be returning this product and going back to Windows 7. I think Windows 8 was actually made for a touch screen.

Michael Merit (Bradenton, FL) :
We have had to buy 11 new antiviruis programs since getting this computer, Soon as we began using this laptop all of our others got viruses, inspite of our antvirus we already had. We have had to pay to have all the computers cleaned and this one has just never worked right, wont load onto internet half the time. It seems like a jinx

Regina P. (Colorado) :
This laptop has been handy and reliable so far. For less than $400, including the 2 year extended warranty, I believe I got a fair deal. My use is pretty simple - a few websites to maintain, QuickBooks, Microsoft Office, internet, and email. Keyboard has a nice light touch.
I gave it 4 stars because i couldn't get it without Windows 8. I know it's silly, but I really don't like Windows 8. If I wanted a touch screen experience all the time, I'd use my phone or tablet. Too many steps to move through the screens.

Jon Vandiver (Dallas, TX) :
This computer is reasonably priced, works well, works quickly, and is one of the best computers I have owned. The RAM was small but it was easily upgradable. I am a very satisfied owner.

Jeff (US) :
The computer is overall a decent and good computer. For the price it is a great sized screen and fast machine. I mostly got this to check email, basic graphics editing, skype, word processing, and web browsing.
At this time haven't had any issues. The only thing keeping me from a five star rating is it is still pretty heavy for portability. Five star for home use.

P. M. Armstrong (USA) :
The computer is great. I have mostly had Gateway computers because I like them. I had a Toshiba once that I loved as well but Gateway is more my style. The only thing I do not like thus far about this laptop is Windows 8. I can definitely see some great aspects to it but it is like learning a whole new operating system. I was replacing my old laptop which died on me hoping to get a similar model, which I did, with the exception of upgrading from Windows 7 to 8. The new software is so different that I am stull learning it weeks later and have not figured it all out. I am getting tired of constantly having to learn a new version of Windows ever few years!

Amy (Michigan) :
The good points: Windows 8 is NOT as bad as you were made to think. Don't let that be your deciding factor; you can even make it look like Windows 7. I like the ability to (semi-easily) customize the trackpad, though the fact that the default is backwards confounds me. I LOVE the mute button, though I wish Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down were their own buttons (this is a 17" laptop, for goodness' sake -- I had it on my 15"!).
The bad point: (which bothers me a lot for some reason) There are NO visual indicators for NumLock or CapsLock. It gets cumbersome when you don't notice you've hit 'CapsLock' instead of 'A' five sentences ago.

Lady Rain (Cincinnat OH) :
As far as I'm concerned, GATEWAY is the only way to go! I purchased my first GATEWAY desktop in 1999 +/- and it lasted nearly 10 years. I gave my laptop to my daughter and updated mine. It's great technology at an excellent price.
